In today’s claims management department implementing a paperless claims management system can sometimes be looked at as an unattainable goal. Difficulty and disruption are high on the list of reasons most claims professionals stay with their antiquated workflow processes. Considering a paperless claims system is now a necessity with hard copies overtaking the claims work environment.

Moving into a paperless claims environment comes with several benefits:

Enhanced Document Depository
With today’s technology, Google type searches, instant retrieval, and information over flow, sophisticated users are demanding. Retrieving documents immediately has become a necessity. The benefit of a paperless claims management system is the access to a robust document depository tool that is designed to supplement and aid in all electronic document storage. Claim managers will have the option to receive, store and view all claim documents electronically.

Updated Business Processes
Going paperless puts a direct spotlight on all current policies and procedures. All claims processes will need to be re-configured to work in tandem with the updated paperless policy. This gives insurers and claim professionals the opportunity to work hand in hand with other departments and vendors to re-work the claims process in a paperless fashion that increases customer satisfaction and decreases costs. The relationship between the IT team and claims department is maximized with an increased amount of communication to create an ideal paperless system that interacts with all functions seamlessly.

Saving Costs
A paperless claim system sets up the foundation for a faster turnaround time for claims, and gives adjusters the needed information to process claims efficiently.

The less time spent on the claims handling increases the savings amount for salaried time spent on each claim. Insurers are also able to create more informed decisions regarding each claim, resulting in lower claim costs.

Transparency
With an entire company’s global operations now connected, it creates cross-department collaborations, and adjusters can create a transparent and efficient environment that welcomes improved business operations. Time zones, office locations, will no longer be a deciding factor in the claims handling process. Having a constant view of claims in a real-time basis creates a turn-key process with additional support including task reminders, input of pre-defined data, and a streamlined process.

In the end, creating a paperless claims management system requires an open mind, a strong vision, and the willingness to embrace today’s new technology. Transitioning to a paperless claims system is an intricate process of carefully piecing together a complicated puzzle. The end goal will be the benefit of increasing the quality of claim outcomes, and improving the customer‘s experience.

One of the biggest challenges for Corporate India today is attracting the right talent, managing its people and defining talent management practices that can be effectively leveraged to drive business results. Attracting and managing talent has become even more critical in service-oriented industries such as insurance where people are the most important asset. Despite being amongst the oldest financial institutions in the world and catering to a very important human need of hedging against uncertain losses, Insurance remains a push product, which requires a large team of adequately trained and equipped front line sales force.

In the current business environment, front line sales force attrition continues to be high and in all likelihood, will remain so. At the mid management level too, there is already a deficit of leadership talent as a large number of employees at this level are constantly torn between company loyalty and career progression. And there is a significant shortage of high quality talent at the senior management level due to unavailability of ready successors.

The increasing talent crunch will force organizations to focus on retaining their critical talent, investing in preparing them well for bigger roles in future and creating an internal and external pipeline of future ready talent. Regular training, development and engagement will be critical as the new workforce desires more in less time and feels relatively lesser bound to stay in one organization for a longer period. Mentoring and balancing aspiration levels will play a key role here.

Also, in a scenario where there is a growing demand for more and more skilled workforce, it is imperative for organizations to define required skill sets and develop a long term plan to build a stable cadre of trained workforce that is continuously motivated by a clear growth plan.

There are certain skill sets and attitudes that organizations would like their prospective employees to have.

People who are proactive, possess agile thinking capability, have a business mindset, are desirous of broadening their knowledge beyond their scope of work, are adept at managing change and are agile learners will be highly valued. The skills gap – between what is expected/ needed and what is available – is not likely to evaporate soon. To manage this skills gap and recruit the right talent, companies need to re-evaluate their business strategies and approaches, including recruitment and talent-search strategies. This is necessary to provide the talent needed to help organizations deal with current business challenges and be future ready.

Post liberalization in 2000, there has been tremendous growth in the Indian insurance industry, more particularly so in the life segment. The total life insurance premium underwritten by the industry has grown from Rs. 26,250 cr. in FY 99-00 to Rs. 291,000 cr. in FY 11-12. India has the largest in-force policies in the world and is among the world’s Top 10 largest insurance markets by collected premium.

Despite this growth, insurance penetration in India is still very low as compared to other countries, including the developing ones. A large number of Indians are not insured. Among those that are insured, most are under-protected. This is despite the fact that the need for protection has continuously grown, whether it is about sustaining current lifestyle, paying off existing loans, or taking care of child’s education, marriage, etc. In addition, the Tier II, Tier III towns and the rural markets – where most of India resides - continues to remain unprotected/ under protected and underserved. This untapped potential throws up tremendous opportunities for the growth of the industry and the resultant employment opportunities in this sector.

The industry already employs more than 25 lac people in various roles and as the population ages and wealth grows, the demand for insurance professionals will continue to increase. Insurance is a relatively stable industry that provides varied and many career development and growth opportunities across different functions – Sales, Marketing Actuarial, Operations, Finance, IT, HR, Customer service, Legal, Compliance etc. Prospective employees can pick and select areas that interest them and where they have built basic knowledge/capability.

The fundamental responsibility of this industry is to ultimately help people when they need it most.

Hence, jobs in insurance involve helping people realize the importance of life protection so that they can secure the financial well-being of their families in case of any eventuality. There is nobility in this profession and people who choose to enter this sector find it personally rewarding.

Many a times, people are quick to pursue a career path and take short term decisions that ultimately may not enable them to achieve their professional, personal and financial aspirations. It is important therefore that prospective employees who are keen to join the insurance industry understand the kind of career options available in the industry.

Roles that are more unique to the insurance industry include:

Actuaries: Actuaries use their analytical skills to predict the risk of writing insurance policies on property, businesses and people's lives and health. Actuaries are a crucial part of the insurance process because they use statistical and mathematical analysis to determine the risk of providing coverage. To do their job effectively, actuaries need to be up-to-date on general societal trends and legislative developments which may affect risk, and also ensure adequate risk mitigation measures are in place. They also need to keep themselves updated on the latest calculating techniques and tools. With the market becoming more competitive, the scope of actuarial work has expanded tremendously.

Underwriters: Underwriters decide whether to provide insurance to applicants seeking coverage. An underwriter evaluates an applicant's exposure to risk and decides whether an applicant meets an insurer's standards. An underwriter may also become involved in setting prices for insurance applicants.

Insurance Agents/ Advisors: Insurance agents and advisors are an integral arm of insurance companies to reach out to and help individuals, families and businesses select insurance policies that provide the best protection for their lives, health and property. Among insurance company agents, there are captive agents who work exclusively for one company and there are brokers who represent many companies. Insurance agents understand customer’s needs, offer products that address these needs, provide after sales service to customers, prepare reports, maintain records and in the event of a loss, help policy-holders settle their insurance claims. An understanding of how to assess clients’ needs and offer relevant insurance solutions is essential to succeed in this role. People who are hardworking, confident, have winning abilities, and possess good communication and interpersonal skills are well suited to take up a career as an insurance agent/ advisor.

Insurance is a high financially rewarding sector. Commissions and incentives are important components of an employee’s and agent’s compensation structure. The better one performs, higher is the commission/ incentive and chances of fast career growth.

The Insurance industry has, and continues to be an attractive sector for employment which provides one of the fastest career growth and development opportunities.
